Olive branch wall art: a terracotta jug with a branch of ripe olives, framed canvas housewarming gift

New homes have bare walls, and the first months in a new place are when people decide what goes up. A painting is the housewarming gift that is still on display years later, long after the candle has burned down. The trick is choosing something that fits a home you may not know well. These are the safest choices, room by room.

The kitchen: always a good bet

Almost every new homeowner has an empty kitchen wall, and still-life paintings suit nearly every style, from farmhouse to modern. A terracotta jug with a branch of ripe olives or glossy Amalfi lemons feel warm without being busy. For coffee people, the moka pot with steam still rising is a quiet joke that never gets old. Cooks will love golden focaccia with rosemary and sea salt, an artichoke opening around a violet heart or a basil plant spilling from a weathered pitcher.

The entryway and living room

The first wall guests see deserves something calm. Botanical pieces work almost anywhere: the William Morris-style Mediterranean botanicals, teal and cream hydrangeas in a vase or a sunlit greenhouse with terracotta pots. If they love to travel, an open window to a favorite place feels personal without being too specific: balcony doors open to Lake Como, an arched stone window over the Amalfi sea or bougainvillea framing a cobalt sea.

Make it about where they live

The most personal housewarming gift is a painting of their city or region. New Yorkers might love Bow Bridge in autumn, Southerners the pastel townhouses of Rainbow Row, Californians Napa vineyards turning gold or the red-tile rooftops of Santa Barbara, and anyone moving to the Southwest a turquoise adobe door hung with chili ristras. A move toward the mountains might call for El Capitan over a wildflower meadow. Browse our travel and city collection for more places.

For the ones who host

If the new place has a bar cart or a home bar, give it a centerpiece: an Old Fashioned with one large ice cube, a speakeasy whiskey glass beside a teal decanter or an Italian wine and cheese board. Our bar cart wall art guide has more.

For a farmhouse or country home

A shaggy ginger Highland cow or a white rooster on a fence rail is the classic farmhouse gift, and it works in a mudroom or kitchen as well as a living room.

Gifting tips: size, frame and timing

When you don't know their walls, go medium. A 12" x 16" or 16" x 20" canvas fits almost anywhere: above a bar cart, on a bookshelf wall, beside a doorway or in a hallway. Save the 24" x 30" and 24" x 32" sizes for someone you know has a sofa wall or a bed wall waiting for a statement piece.

Pick the frame that disappears. Most pieces come framed in a choice of Black, Espresso, White or Natural wood, and a few are gallery-wrapped canvas that needs no frame. Black and Espresso suit darker, moodier rooms and the bar-scene paintings. Natural and White suit lighter, airier homes. If in doubt, Black is the safest choice.

Order early. Each canvas is printed and framed to order rather than pulled from a shelf, so it needs a few days to be made before it ships. For holiday gifts, order well ahead of the December rush.
